Work:

These were the first pieces I experimented with when I decided to officially choose my career as a sculptor. I discovered them in a museum in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was an exhibit titled "The Devine and the Grotesque" the proprotional studies of Leonardo da Vinci. As descriptive as the sketches were, I felt a stron urge to create them in three dimensions. In doing so, I feel like I am discovering the true charracters that Leonardo used as models or inspiration. His concept was to better understand what constitutes "beauty" by studying the "grotesque". I am producing these bronze versions of the work in a limited edition casting of 75 of each piece.

Poking around a bit, looking at some of the more recent uploaded profiles, I've seen some fun work. Even stuff I wouldn't ordinarily look at twice has an alluring quality to it. Although "Art" is generally a solo act of inspiration, it is nice to see that there are others that share the need to express it on their own terms.

Whereas before, I would see only the piece. Now I'm exposed to the soul that created it, thus giving the piece new meaning and power.

Very interesting, indeed...

Reply to "Well I"
Yeah, a social networking site for artists is a bit of wishfull thinking, however all sorts of people are involed in the arts, so you would think it might work, however there are serious flaws in this site...how are we ment to network when the only interconnections available are based on star ratings and "most viewed"? It would be nice if the "recent blog" part dangled more than two words before my eyes. Since we are all caught up in the visual, as a starting point it might be helpfull to me if i could see a random slide show of all the works on this site, where I could click on an image of MY choice, instead of trying to negociate through "most viewed" and "highest rated".

I live in the Western Isles of Scotland where there are no roads, Im quite isolated, my neihbors are great people, but they couldnt give a sh*t about artists issues. Is it possible artists are so self obsessed that networking is futile? I would hope not.
From my viewpoint I am oblivious what it would be like to work with other artists as you do. I was reading an article written in a DVD catalog about an animation which discussed the ability of great artists being able to recognise when to relinquish control for the sake of collaboration, some of which you speak of. How can this be applied to MYARTINFO?

thank you for your blog

Richard

Well, I was talking with a few friends last night (Yes, an Artist can have friends!) qnd we all agreed that a social networking site for Artists is a bit odd.

I have been running my own company for 15 years and have been a "boss" off and on for another 5. Since the work (SPecial Effects) is unusual, it attracts the unusual types.

I tell people that in my field, the kinds of people that are attracted to it were mostly the odd loners that spent their youths planning world domination, dreaming of fanciful inventions, building model kits, etc.

They all come to this job looking for creativity and some semblance of control. The weird thing is that this work is SO collaborative. It takes many people in many capacities to create the work and everyone must be able to pull together as a team.

In short, I need to wrangle these loners and solitary personalities in to some kind of functioning unit like a family.

That should give a little hint as to why a "social site" for "Artists" seems a little odd.

I find it very interesting that this site is considered a social network. Hmm, after several weeks up, and several visitors, there are a few views but no comments, critiques or social interaction of any kind. I guess we artists are a sloitary bunch prowling for inspiration and/or competition to compare ourselves to... Ya' think?

Re: Lhaste

Your work is lovely. In reading your profile, I see we both had life-changing moments in the UK (Mine was first in Edinborough, then at the Victoria/Albert Museum in London. Ahh, what would we do without divine inspiration?

Again, beautiful work...

Re: Efeatherstonehoff

I really love thies images. They're very simple and inviting, yet dark and forboding at the same time. Did I just see some of them at the Brewery Art walk in Los Angeles recently?

I get the feeling of meloncholy looking at the pictures of the "doll". very expressive and oddly intriguing. The rocking horse is quite fun and a lovely piece as well. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Zivart

The more I look at your painted sculptures, the more fun they become. As a sculptor who's somewhat afraid of color, I like how you've used it to bring the pieces to life... Thanks for sharing them!

Re: Paigebradley

Really beautiful work. Full of movement and life.

Re: Efeatherstonehoff

...And "The Women" - I just love it!

Re: Efeatherstonehoff

Wow, "Secrets" and "State Of Mind" are realy powerful. Nice work.

Re: Theoneiricrealist

very cool work. It has a meaty texture and relly draws you in to the possibilities within. I"m primarily a sculptore but this work speaks volumes.

Re: Richardstewartwalsh

Hello Richard! It is nice to know that I'm not alone in this little world. I suppose that it is possible that this site will grow and evolve enough to keep people like us coming back. There's nothing like exposure to motivate and Artist.

Wow, Scotland. All of my life I had never thought much about the UK or Europe. I'm more of a "tropical island" type of guy. However, back a few years ago, I had the opportunity to go to London for a Make-up Trade show. My wife and I stayed an extra couple of weeks and I got up to Edinburgh. To say that I fell in love with it is an understatement. The people, the architecture - it was all wonderful. All I wanted was a few hundred pounds of clay and 6 months. I wanted to make a copy of Rosslyn Chappel in the worst way.

It is also where I discovered Leonardo's Grotesque drawings. It turned me from a freelance Effects artist to a full-fledged sculptor of fine art.

Anyway, glad to meet you. Your work is quite beautiful.Hope your day is great!

Rob
