'Schizophrenia'

The title ‘Schizophrenia’ is being expressed in oil paints using the impasto technique in certain areas of the painting. The term ‘Schizophrenia’ deriving from the greek words ‘schizo’ and ‘phrenos’ means ‘shattered mind’ where the basic thought structure is considered to be fragmented. This concept is achieved by the contrasts in black and white, where the woolen threads are struggling to try and repair the damage. The whole hallucinatory effect is surmounted by pure feeling where the same portrait is portrayed twice in the same painting yet looks in opposite direction as they pull one canvas apart from the other, however are still linked by the same person, indicated by two threads which can hardly join them together. The reason for the torn canvas is not solely for aesthetic purposes but also for symbolic means of combining the atmosphere within the painting. Wherever the painting is placed it becomes part of the scene, therefore combining illusions with reality. The way in which the portrait looks into the eyes of the spectator draws him into her mind so that the viewer can experience the exact feelings and emotions that she goes through.
