Cartersville, GA (December 11, 2007) – Booth Western Art Museum surveys talent across the Southwest. The “21st Century Regionalists: Art of the New West” exhibition, curated by James Burns, amasses art interpretive of the beautiful Southwest terrain with a contemporary edge.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the work of Mark Yale Harris, renowned sculptor. Harris studied his craft under the most well respected artists of the West, Bill Prokopiof (Aleut.1944-1999) and Doug Hyde (Nez Perce), both men noted protégés of the nation’s most recognized Native American artist, sculptor Allan Houser (Chiricahua Apache, 1915-1994). Harris’s stylized stone and bronze forms are deeply inspired by the Southwest, from the austere cowboy, herd of longhorns, to the charming horse. The patinas of his sculptures are beautiful and complex, calling forth the viewer to touch their smooth burnishes, appreciated for their simplicity and ability to capture emotion.

Equally exciting is the work of Rebecca and Joshua Tobey, brightly colored bronze sculptures of animals with elements of abstract and realism. Other participating artists include: Woody Gwyn, Elaine Holien, Tricia Higgins Hurt, Trish Booth, Howard Post, Doug Smith, Jim Vogel, Josh Eliot, Gary Ernest Smith, Louisa McElwain, and Ed Sandoval.

Curator James Burns comments on the exhibition, stating, that it “Represent[s] the stylistic center of the spectrum of Western art today, these artists form a dynamic gumbo of aesthetic styles of expression that makes it a challenge to categorize them into a particular school of art. Taking liberties with color, form, composition, texture, light, shape, and perspective, these artists interpret their subjects based on personal experience and emotions, creating artwork that is more expressive than illustrative.”
